Startup waste is the hidden entry fee on every order

Bringing a line to dimensional stability consumes material, time and operator attention before the first saleable length appears. On a simple profile that period is brief; on a multi-cavity, co-extruded or tightly toleranced product it can dominate a short order entirely. Spread across a long run that cost is trivial; spread across a short one it exceeds the value of the goods. If your volumes are genuinely small, ask about joining a scheduled campaign for that die rather than requesting a standalone run.
Can we move an existing die to another extruder?
Physically yes, commercially it is rarely as simple as it looks. Dies are matched to a particular machine, screw and downstream configuration, so the receiving plant will need trial time to reach your tolerances, and may want to modify the tool. Check the ownership terms and whether development costs were fully paid. How does weight per metre affect our purchase price?
Directly, if you buy by length but the supplier costs by mass. A profile running consistently above nominal weight consumes more polymer per metre, which the extruder either absorbs or recovers through price. Suppliers who measure continuously and hold near nominal are usually cheaper over a year than those quoting a lower rate with loose control.
