Manufacturing methodology

This cluster describes how manufacturing works as an operation and as a business. It is written for people making decisions — which production model a product suits, what a supplier has to prove before it ships, where cost and risk sit in a factory, and which constraint binds first when demand moves.

What this cluster will not publish

No factory costs. No production volumes, plant counts or capacity figures. No yields, cycle times, defect rates or scrap percentages presented as typical. No market sizes, growth rates, margins, payback periods or improvement percentages. No supplier, vendor or factory directory, and no manufacturer named as a recommendation. Every one of these varies by product, process, site and contract, and none is verifiable here — so rather than estimate them the cluster omits them and describes the mechanism instead. An automated check rejects any page whose prose carries a numeric claim outside a small set of standard and methodology references.

Methodology notes

  • Structural and industrial-development material cites the intergovernmental body that produces it: UNIDO for industrial development, the OECD and the World Bank for economic structure, Eurostat and the European Commission for EU industry and product rules, the WTO for trade rules, and UNECE for vehicle and dangerous-goods regulation.
  • Worker and machinery safety cites the agency that enforces it — OSHA in the United States, EU-OSHA and the European Commission for the EU framework — never a consultancy summary.
  • Product-regulation material cites the regulator that owns the product class: the FDA and EMA for regulated medical and pharmaceutical products, EFSA and the European Commission for food, ECHA for chemicals, and national market-surveillance authorities where relevant.
  • Measurement, metrology and manufacturing-technology material cites NIST. Industrial control-system security material cites CISA. Intellectual-property material cites WIPO, EUIPO or the national office.
  • Standards are referenced, never reproduced. A page states what a standard governs and links to the issuing body's own public description of it. No clause text is quoted or paraphrased as though it were the standard's wording, and nothing here determines conformity — the standard and an accredited assessment do.
  • Vendor documentation is used only for factual statements about what a technology does, never for comparative, performance or market claims, and no vendor is reviewed, rated or recommended.
  • No SEO blog, aggregator, content farm or supplier-marketing page is used as a factual authority anywhere in this cluster.

Scope boundaries

How overlap is prevented

  • Each concept has exactly one owning section. Models covers how production is organised; industries covers how a sector works as a manufacturing business; operations covers running the plant day to day; procurement covers buying production inputs; quality covers acceptance and correction; lean covers improvement method; automation covers control and machine technology; software covers the systems; facilities covers the building; compliance covers obligations; contract manufacturing and private label cover the outsourced and branded arrangements.
  • A page may reference a concept owned elsewhere only in passing, with a link, never as a section of its own. An automated check rejects any 8-word sequence that appears on more than two pages, which is what stops templated prose at this scale.
  • Where the logistics and supply chain cluster already owns an intent — strategic sourcing, supplier qualification, inventory policy, warehousing, customs formalities, freight — this cluster links to it rather than restating it. Manufacturing pages own the factory-internal question; the logistics cluster owns the network question.
  • Software pages cover manufacturing-specific systems only. Generic business software categories are out of scope for this cluster.
  • Comparison pages state their criteria explicitly and do not declare a winner: they describe the conditions under which each option fits.
  • Industrial hub pages describe a location as an industrial system. They carry no output or employment figures, no rankings, and no city tourism content.
  • Country coverage follows the GeoBusinessIQ country graph. A jurisdiction gets a manufacturing page only when it already has a country profile behind it, rather than being invented to reach a page count.

Calculators

Every manufacturing calculator is a pure function of the figures you enter. None reads a cost database, a machine feed or an industry benchmark, because none is available here. Each shows its formula, states what it excludes, and returns warnings when an input is missing, clamped or produces a degenerate result. They are orientation models for structuring a decision, not an industrial engineering study.

Data limitations

  • Manufacturing figures are operator-supplied inputs, not market data. GeoBusinessIQ holds no factory costs, production volumes, yields, cycle times, tooling prices or capacity data and does not estimate them — every result reflects only the figures you enter.
  • Standards are referenced, never reproduced. Pages describe what a standard governs and point to the issuing body; they do not restate its requirements, and conformity is determined by the standard itself and by an accredited assessment, not by anything here.
