Waste is generated at every handover, not once

Bringing a press up to colour discards web. Threading a laminator and reaching bond consistency discards more. Setting slitter knives to a new width discards again, and pouch making adds its own start-up loss. Presses and laminators run at a fixed maximum width, and reels are bought accordingly. Multi-layer laminates combining different polymers deliver barrier performance but are difficult to recycle, and producer fees increasingly reflect that. Converters that develop and trial alternatives early can charge for the development and lock in the volume. Are recyclable mono-material pouches a like-for-like replacement?
Not usually, and treating them as one causes trouble. Removing a barrier layer changes oxygen and moisture performance, so shelf life must be re-established for your specific product. Sealing windows are often narrower, which can slow your packing line or increase leakers. Stiffness and machinability differ, so the pack may behave differently in a rotary or vertical form-fill-seal machine. Plan a development programme with trial runs and storage testing rather than a straight substitution on the next order.
