Machines get chosen, ordered and delivered on a timescale set by the supplier. The electricity to run them arrives on a timescale set by a network operator, a transformer manufacturer and whoever holds the switchgear lead time. Plants that discover this order of events late end up with equipment standing on the floor waiting for a supply, and the delay is entirely outside their control once the position has been reached.

Connection timescales set the programme, not the equipment order

Increasing an incoming supply involves a network operator's design, its own construction work, and often equipment with long manufacturing lead times. None of this responds to commercial urgency. That means the electrical enquiry belongs at the front of a project, before equipment selection is finalised, so the answer can influence what is bought and when. Where the required increase is substantial, it may change the site decision entirely. Treat the network operator's written response as a project document with a date attached, and re-check it whenever the load assumptions change.

Headroom at the board matters as much as at the meter

A site can have adequate incoming capacity and still be unable to connect a machine, because the distribution serving that area is full, the route to it has no spare, or the protective arrangement will not accommodate the new load. The relevant question is not what the site imports but what is available at the point where the equipment will stand. Answering it requires current knowledge of the distribution, which many plants do not have. Establishing that picture, and updating it as installations change, converts a recurring project unknown into a routine check.

Records, drawings and the panel nobody has opened

Electrical installations accumulate modifications faster than documentation does. Circuits get added, machines are removed and their supplies left live, labelling stops matching reality, and eventually nobody can say with confidence what a given breaker feeds. That uncertainty makes every project slower, every fault harder to diagnose, and isolation for maintenance genuinely hazardous. Bringing records up to date through a proper survey is unglamorous work that repays itself the first time someone needs to isolate safely under time pressure. It is also usually a prerequisite for any meaningful assessment of remaining capacity.

Standards, competence and who is permitted to do the work

Electrical installation is governed by national wiring regulations and by international standards work of the kind the International Electrotechnical Commission coordinates, with requirements for design, inspection, testing, certification and periodic verification. Who may carry out and certify the work is defined by law in most jurisdictions. This is an area where nothing should be inferred from general reading: appoint designers and contractors qualified under the local regime, insist on the certification the regime requires, and keep it. Machine suppliers' installation guidance is an input to that design, not a substitute for it.

Load keeps rising, so plan for the direction of travel

Processes that once used gas or steam are moving to electric heating, vehicle fleets are electrifying, and equipment carries more electronics and more auxiliary loads than the machines it replaces. Sites are also increasingly considering on-site generation and storage, which alters the connection arrangement rather than removing the need to think about it. Anyone specifying incoming capacity today for a facility expected to last decades should assume demand grows, and should establish what an increase would involve before the building is committed rather than when it becomes urgent. What should we ask the network operator before committing to a site?
Request the firm capacity available at the proposed connection point, what an increase would cost, how long it would take including any wider reinforcement, and whether known constraints exist on that part of the network. Ask whether the answer is subject to other parties taking capacity first, because on constrained networks availability can disappear while you deliberate. Get it in writing, keep it with the project file, and refresh it if your load estimate changes materially during design.
How do we find out how much spare electrical capacity our plant has?
Measurement plus survey, in that order. Logging demand at the incomer and at main distribution points over a period covering peak production gives the actual load profile, which is usually well below the sum of nameplate ratings and sometimes higher than anyone expected. A survey of the distribution then establishes what capacity exists at each board and what is genuinely spare. An electrical engineer should interpret both, because remaining capacity depends on protection arrangements and cable ratings rather than on arithmetic alone.
Is on-site generation an alternative to upgrading the supply?
It can reduce the import a site needs and is worth assessing, but it rarely removes the connection question. Generation on site still requires an agreed connection arrangement with the network operator, protection to prevent unsafe export, and consideration of what happens when it is unavailable. Storage can help manage peaks without increasing capacity. Any such scheme needs designing by engineers familiar with the local connection rules, and the commercial case depends heavily on tariff structure at that location.
