Storing a pallet feels like a housekeeping task and behaves like an investment decision. The position chosen determines how far somebody walks or drives to fetch that stock, how much of the fast-pick area remains available, and whether the record will still be right in a month. Nearest empty space is the instinct of every operator under pressure, and it is frequently the most expensive choice available.

Storing is a bet on the next retrieval

A load placed far from the despatch end saves seconds now and costs minutes each time it is fetched, multiplied by how often the line is picked. For a fast line, that trade is almost always wrong; for something ordered rarely, the distant position is exactly right. Good practice therefore stores by expected demand rather than by convenience at the moment of arrival, which requires the system to know something about the product's movement.

Fixed, random and directed schemes

Fixed locations give every product a permanent home, which is simple to learn and wasteful when stock levels vary. Purely random placement uses space efficiently and makes the record indispensable, since nobody can find anything without it. Directed placement, in which the system proposes a position from rules about velocity, weight, temperature, hazard class and available space, is the common middle path, and its usefulness depends entirely on whether the rules are maintained as the range changes.

Combining journeys instead of repeating them

An operator taking a pallet into the racking is travelling with a full truck one way and an empty one back. Interleaving that trip with a retrieval from a nearby location halves the empty running, which is one of the few genuine productivity gains available without capital. It requires the system to hold both queues and to assign work dynamically, and it requires supervisors to accept that the sequence of tasks will not look tidy.

Replenishment is storing with a deadline

Moving stock from reserve into a pick face is the same physical act with an urgency attached, because an empty face stops picking altogether. Triggering it by minimum level, by anticipated demand for the coming wave, or by a request from the picker each produces a different pattern of interruption. Whichever is used, replenishment work has to be visible on the same task list as everything else, or it competes invisibly with picking for the same trucks.

The confirmation is the whole point

A putaway that is not confirmed at the location, by scanning the position label rather than accepting a suggestion, is a guess recorded as a fact. Blind confirmations are the largest single source of stock that exists but cannot be found, and they are usually a symptom of position labels that are unreadable from a truck or of a device that is awkward to use at height. Fixing the label and the handset removes more error than any amount of retraining.

Why do fixed locations waste space?
Because each product's home has to be large enough for its maximum stock, and most of the time it holds less than that. Across a whole range the unused remainder is substantial, and none of it can be lent to a line that is temporarily overstocked.
What causes stock to become unfindable in a random location system?
Almost always an unconfirmed or mis-scanned position. Once the record points to the wrong place, the stock is invisible to picking and only reappears through a count, which is why scan discipline at the location matters more here than anywhere else.
