A block train is despatched as a single unit from one terminal and arrives complete at another, with no wagons detached or added along the way. Removing the marshalling yard from the journey removes both the largest source of delay in conventional rail freight and most of its unpredictability. The price of that is having to fill the train, in both directions, on a repeating basis.

Skipping the reclassification yard
Traditional wagonload rail collects individual wagons, sorts them by destination in marshalling yards and rebuilds trains repeatedly along the route. Each sort is a wait measured in hours, and each is an opportunity for a wagon to be misdirected. A block service is built once and broken once, so its transit reduces to running time plus crew changes and border formalities, and its reliability improves accordingly.
Someone has to fill the whole train
Because the unit is the train rather than the wagon, the volume required is substantial and must be sustained. Large industrial shippers with continuous flows can do it alone. Elsewhere, an operator or consolidator sells space on the train to many customers and takes the fill risk itself, which is how intermodal corridor services are usually structured.
Terminals at both ends must be able to cope
A block service needs sidings long enough to accept the full train, lifting equipment or discharge facilities sized to work it inside a reasonable window, and storage to hold what comes off. Where a terminal can only take part of a train at a time, the service has to be split, and much of the advantage disappears. Terminal capability is therefore chosen before the corridor is marketed.
The empty return is the commercial problem
A train that runs full one way and empty back has to recover both legs from a single flow of traffic. Corridor operators spend enormous effort finding backhaul cargo, even at reduced rates, because a modest improvement in return loading changes the economics of the whole service. Corridors that carry manufactured goods in one direction frequently struggle to find anything comparable coming the other way.
Choosing block working over wagonload
Block services suit steady, high-volume, point-to-point flows where both ends have proper facilities and where transit reliability matters. Wagonload retains a role for customers whose volumes are small, whose flows are irregular, or whose destinations are scattered across a network, accepting slower and less predictable transit in exchange.
