Craneability and the other quiet blockers

Plenty of intermodal proposals die on a detail nobody checked. The trailer is not built to be lifted, the receiving yard has no space to hold a swap body, the terminal has no slot at the hour when the goods are ready, or the unit exceeds a profile limit somewhere along the corridor. Run those checks first, because they are binary. If the unit cannot be handled or the terminal cannot take it, no rate comparison matters. Where the blocker is your own equipment, replacing it over the normal renewal cycle can open the option later, which is a decision worth taking deliberately rather than by default.

The buffer day and what it is worth

Fixed departures usually mean building a day of slack into the plan so that a missed cut-off is not a missed delivery. That day has a price: extra stock at destination, a slightly earlier despatch, or a promise made a little more conservatively to the customer. Compare that price with the corridor saving directly. If holding the buffer costs less than the difference between the two routings, the intermodal case stands. If the receiving operation runs so tightly that no buffer exists, the comparison is really about whether that tightness is itself the right design.

Making the two routings genuinely comparable

Quote both door to door and over the same period, because seasonal effects hit each differently. Include collection, terminal handling, the corridor leg, delivery, unit rental while it waits, and any storage charges for units left at a terminal beyond free time. Then record what actually happened over a run of consignments. Terminals differ in how reliably they meet their own schedules, and a corridor with a good rate and a poor record is worse than a slightly dearer one that behaves predictably.

Frequently asked questions

Does the shipper have to deal with the terminal directly?
Usually not. Intermodal operators and forwarders sell the whole routing including both road legs, which is generally the easier way to buy it. Direct terminal relationships make sense only at volumes that justify managing the handovers yourself.
What happens if a unit misses its departure?
It waits, and storage may start to accrue at the terminal. Because the cost of that is predictable, the useful preparation is agreeing in advance with the operator what happens next and whether an urgent consignment can be pulled and trucked instead.
Is short sea part of the same decision?
