Rail moves in indivisible lumps. A terminal that can assemble a full train to one destination behaves nothing like one that gathers scattered wagons for sorting elsewhere, and the difference decides both price and reliability for the shipper. Block trains against wagonload thinking
A block train runs complete from origin to destination without being broken up. It offers the best transit and the simplest cost base, but it demands enough volume to fill it and a counterflow to justify the return. Wagonload traffic collects individual wagons that are sorted at intermediate yards, which serves smaller consignors at the price of longer and less certain transit. Most commercial rail offers today are built on the first model. If your volume cannot fill a service on its own, the realistic route in is buying space on someone else's train through an operator or a forwarder that aggregates flows.
Sidings, shunting and the labour nobody quotes
Getting a train from the running line into a loading position takes shunting moves, a certified driver, ground staff and time. Terminals with short sidings must split arriving trains, which doubles the moves and lengthens the occupation window. That labour is real cost, and it is usually buried in a terminal handling charge rather than itemised. It also constrains opening hours. Where shunting crews work fixed shifts, the terminal cannot simply extend to accommodate a late arrival, and cargo presented outside the window waits for the next one.
Loading gauge and route clearance travel with the train
What a terminal can load depends on what the whole route can carry: overhead structures, tunnel profiles, platform clearances and permitted axle loads apply along the entire path, not just at the yard. High-cube containers on standard wagons are the classic constraint, since the combined height may exceed what a given corridor accepts. Operators solve this with lower-deck wagons where available, but the equipment is finite. Confirm at booking that the route accepts the unit height you intend to load, particularly on cross-border flows where clearance standards change at the frontier.
The road legs are still part of the rail price
Almost no consignment starts or ends at the rail head. Collection and delivery by road at both ends carry driver time, waiting at the terminal gate and often a tight return window for the trailer or chassis. On a short rail leg these two road movements can outweigh the line-haul entirely. When comparing rail with straight road haulage, price the door-to-door chain, including terminal handling at both ends and any storage that accrues while a unit waits for its service.

- Do I need enough cargo to fill a whole train?
- Not necessarily. Operators and forwarders sell space on scheduled services they fill from several customers, which is how smaller flows reach rail. Chartering a complete service only becomes sensible with steady volume in both directions, since an empty return leg is charged to somebody.
- Why can a terminal refuse a high-cube container?
- Because clearance is a property of the route rather than the site. If the combined height of the wagon and the unit exceeds what structures along the path allow, the load cannot travel, and the terminal will only accept it if suitable low-deck wagons are available for that service.
- How firm are rail cut-off times?
- Firmer than road. The service holds an allocated path across the network and cannot simply wait, so a consignment presented late is held for a following departure. Build the terminal cut-off into your production or picking plan rather than treating it as a target.
