Methodology

Position utilisation = occupied pallet positions ÷ total pallet positions. Storage area share = racked storage area ÷ total facility area, which shows how much of the building is doing storage work rather than aisles, docks, staging, and offices. Cost per available position = monthly storage cost ÷ total positions; cost per occupied position divides the same cost across only the positions earning their keep. Empty position cost = cost per available position × free positions. Utilisation bands are operational rules of thumb, not a standard: very high occupancy typically reduces put-away and pick efficiency because there is no slack to slot into. Excluded: seasonality, honeycombing, mixed storage media, cube utilisation within a position, and any revenue side.
