Methodology
Observed cycle time = observed run minutes ÷ good units produced, in seconds — the elapsed pace the line actually achieved, not a standard time. Labour content = observed cycle time × operators, which is the person-seconds each unit consumed regardless of how they were arranged. Value-add ratio = the value-adding seconds you enter ÷ observed cycle time; the remainder is waiting, handling, walking, inspection and rework carried inside the cycle. Setup seconds per unit spreads setup time across the run length, which is why a short run carries a heavier setup burden per unit than a long one. Fully loaded cycle time adds that setup share to the observed cycle time, giving the pace a scheduler should plan against rather than the pace the line shows once it is running. Units per operator hour divides throughput by the labour applied, which is the figure that moves when you change staffing rather than equipment. Excluded: unplanned downtime outside the observed run, scrap already removed by counting good units only, product mix, learning effects, and any distinction between bottleneck and non-bottleneck stations.
